Today´s cathedral is a Gothic and neo-Gothic nave with a transept and tower. The present-day Frankfurt Cathedral was originally a Carolingian chapel. Although called a cathedral since the 18th century, it never was an episcopal church in the true sense.

From mediaeval times onwards, the cathedral served as the seat of the imperial monastery, becoming the electoral site for German kings in the 12th century. Further, it was Frankfurt´s only parish church from 1239 until the construction of old St Peter´s Church in 1419. With the relocation of the coronation ceremonies for Holy Roman kings from Aachen to Frankfurt in 1562, the monastery received the honorary title of “cathedral”, which has remained to this day. The vested right of coronation lay with the City of Aachen – with the Archbishop of Cologne, to be precise – while the Archbishop of Mainz oversaw the election of the monarch. Frankfurt, belonged to the dominion of Mainz, which is why the archbishop appointed himself provost of Frankfurt, authorising him to perform coronation ceremonies as well. Thus, Bartholomew Monastery was designated “second episcopal church”.

On 14 August 1867, just one day before the visit of the Prussian king, Wilhelm I, a fire ravaged much of the cathedral. Flying sparks had caused the cathedral´s roof to catch fire, completely destroying it as well as the tower. The interior was severely damaged. Soon thereafter, the cathedral was comprehensively reconstructed in neo-Gothic style under the supervision of Franz Josef Denzinger. Air raids at the end of Second World War once again badly damaged the roof of the cathedral; the vault of the southern transept and parts of the cloister were completely destroyed. Reconstruction work lasted from 1950 to 1953, the interior was repainted in discreet white. During the last restoration phase from 1991 to 1994, the walls and columns were painted brick-red. The white stone blocks were repainted according to the mediaeval originals. The renovators tried their best to render the interior as close to the Gothic original as possible. Still existing colour schemes on vaults and stone sculptures were cleansed and repainted.

Especially for Visitors

It is hard to imagine that the historical Kaiserdom imperial cathedral was the highest building in the city as late as the 1950s. Today, the famous skyline can be seen from very far away. And right in the middle, where the banking quarter meets the city center: the MAIN TOWER.

If you take a somewhat closer look at Frankfurt, you soon discover that Germany’s leading financial center has a great deal more to offer than just stock markets and banks. And not everything at the MAIN TOWER revolves around international finance either! With its cultural highlights and first-class cuisine, exciting insights and constantly fascinating panoramas, the MAIN TOWER is not just a special skyscraper, it has also become a true symbol of Frankfurt. Welcome

Welcome to Frankfurt! We would like to invite you to take a closer look at Frankfurt, the metropolis, where the world obviously feels at home. Frankfurt is the centre of one of the most productive and dynamic regions in Europe. As continental Europe’s largest financial centre, home of the European Central Bank and to the headquarters of many companies, the international importance of Frankfurt continues to grow. Frankfurt is a dynamic European metropolis, a global village, a melting pot of cultures, languages and lifestyles. The imposing skyline is what newcomers remember most. But behind those glass facades the atmosphere is surprisingly relaxed. Nice to meet you in Germany’s most international city: open-minded, tolerant and diverse. Welcome to Frankfurt!Sightseeing

Frankfurt has always been and still remains a major European commercial crossroad. Situated on a long bend in the Main River and connected to the powerful north/south trade routes of the Rhein, Frankfurt’s political and trade dynasties prospered over the centuries. Examples include Charlemagne’s heirs and the fabled 19th century Rothschilds. A streak of liberalism as well as an appreciation of the arts have thrived in Frankfurt. The great, 19th century poet Goethe was born and flourished here and the first German parliament convened at St. Paul’s Church in 1848. After the second World War, Frankfurt rebuilt itself by utilizing the prevailing architectural styles of modern, post war Europe. Today, the city boasts the country’s busiest airport, tallest office building, largest stock exchange and most lucrative shopping district. Its trade fair grounds are legendary and attract over a million visitors annually. Consequently, present day Frankfurt is often considered high on business and low on charm. In response, the city’s tourist association has embarked on a dynamic strategy highlighting specific and very worthwhile historical attractions. High on the list is the cobblestone paved district of Sachsenhausen. Amidst the inner city’s encircling glass and metal, this lovely district nicely quenches the thirst for a romantic past. Here you will find small squares, fountains, numerous museums, taverns and cozy restaurants . . .

Old Opera House The Old Opera House is a building typically representative of the Gründerzeit (the time of the founders), the moment in which Germany experienced an industrial launch in the late 19th Century. The building is the result of a donations of the wealthier neighbours of Frankfurt; on October 22, 1880, after 7 years of work, The Opera Theatre was officially opened with a rendition of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”.

Until its destruction sometime near the end of the Second World War, Frankfurt ‘s Opera House had eight artistic directors, many premiers and famous composers and soloists using its facilities and stages. Some of Wagner’s newest operas were performed here, and names such as Bizet, Leoncavallo, Puccini, Mascagni, Smetana, Richard Strauss and Humperdinck were all on the program.

After the war, an arduous debate broke out that lasted for several years, which contemplated if the Old Opera House should be reconstructed or if the ruins should simply be removed. Fortunately, the first post-war mayor’s proposal to dynamite the remains failed hopelessly. Restoration and reconstruction lasted until 1981, when the Opera House was formally reopened. Today it hosts over 600 concerts a year and special performances such as the dance arts, have made the Opera come to be a crucial cultural center in Frankfurt.

Come to the Old Opera House and enjoy one of the many performances put on here while learning German at a German Language Course in Frankfurt.oraiIn Frankfurt you will encounter a moderately humid climate, with rain throughout most of the year. Frankfurt’s summers are generally warm with some rainy days, the hottest month being July. During this sunny season you’ll enjoy temperatures of between 10 and 32 degrees Celsius (50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit). Moderately light clothes should be fine but it is always a good idea to bring a rainproof coat along for the occasional rainy day or chillier night.

During this time of the year temperatures range between -10 and 10 degrees Celsius (14 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit). from the airport: Those arriving in Germany by plane will usually land at Frankfurt Airport, Frankfurt am Main, coded FRA in the international aviation codes. The city has the largest airport in the country, with the most frequent and connections to all destinations worldwide.

In order to get from the airport to the city there are two options: public transport is available; subway line S8 will take you to the central station downtown in under 30 minutes. If you prefer taxis, a ride will cost you between 15 and 25 Euros, depending on where you are going and how heavy the traffic is.

From the station: Once you are in the lobby you should see the Tour Office to the right, just in front of the main exit.

By car: The A3, A5, A66 and A67 highways lead right into the heart of the city. The best thing to do would be to follow the signs indicating ‘Zentrum ‘ (downtown) and the ‘Hauptbahnhof ‘ (central station). The Tour Office is just in front of the station. There are other tour offices in the Römerberg, the city’s historic quarter and also on the pedestrian-only Die Zeil Street.

Moving around Frankfurt

The fastest and cheapest way of moving around in Frankfurt is using public transport, namely the subway and buses. Taxis are also trustworthy although a little more expensive. It is perfectly safe to flag a taxi on the street. Another option is renting a car.

For stock brokers working in the Frankfurt stock exchange a typical day doesn’t end until the New York Stock Exchange closes. They are constantly on tenterhooks when it comes to activities on Wall Street, glued to their cell phones and keeping electronic pagers on them at all times. However not everyone in this city is in finance. Many others allow themselves some leisure time after work at one of the city’s many bars, maybe drinking an Ebbelwoi (Apfelwein or apple wine in the dialect used in Hesse), the region’s typical cider.

People in Frankfurt are open and friendly and you will be sure to find them in bars socializing with the next table along.

The Frankfurt of today is the result of a fusion of a score of minor municipalities. However, despite the over half a million inhabitants, one doesn’t get the feeling of being in a large city.

Frankfurt is not just an agglomeration of skyscrapers bunched together in a financial district; it also has enormous parks stretching all over its city centre, such as the Botanic Gardens or the Palmengarten with a group of greenhouses harbouring exotic plants.

Frankfurt ‘s cultural life is especially important: the Schirn Museum, the Staedel Institute of Art along the Museum Embankment, the Museum of Modern Art, the Leibig Municipal Museum of Sculpture, the Museum of Architecture and Film. There is also a great selection of theatre, ballet and concerts.

The fifth biggest city in Germany, Frankfurt on Main (Frankfurt am Main) has gained enormous economic power – both within Germany and abroad – thanks to its position as a key transport hub and its status as a major venue for international trade fairs and other business events. Located in the middle of the highly productive Rhine-Main region in Germany, right at the centre of Europe, the city is the financial heart not only of Germany but also of the European Union, pumping Euros into the world economy.
